I am in gorgeous South Africa blogging about my FAM trip to scout South Africa for our travel program. After an amazing FAM to Kenya last year we have kicked off our travel program and I am leading a group to Kenya in November.
So I have come to South Africa to scout amazing things in hopes of offering a trip in 2014! Follow me here throughout my travels to read about all of the wonderful things I am seeing.
We landed in Cape Town on Sunday after a 24 hour journey and arrived at the beautiful Taj Cape Town hotel in downtown Cape Town. Cape Town is a bustling city on the water front with many shops, restaurants and things to see and do. The Taj is a gorgeous hotel with many amenities and a world class spa. http://www.tajcapetown.co.za/blog/. The weather in Cape Town is fairly mild. 70′s during the day, 50′s or so at night. Definitely need layers!
On our first day of travel yesterday we visited the African penguins at Boulder Beach. A board walk runs through the beach area and you can walk amongst the penguins while they nest, play and eat. They are so many penguins and they are so cute. There are babies on up through adults and its quite amazing to get so close to them.
After our penguin excursion we took a breathtaking drive to Cape of Good Hope at the end of the earth and hiked up to the lighthouse after having lunch on the water at an amazing restaurant. You are surrounded by mountains, rugged shorelines and blue sea all around you as you hike around the Cape. http://www.capepoint.co.za/
Along the drive we spotted sea lions, whales, ostrich, bontebok, eland and hyrax. Oh and baboons. There really is wildlife everywhere.
After leaving the Cape we made our way to Table Mountain. The most recognizable mountain in Cape Town the Table is the signature of the city and viewable from all around the city. After riding the funicular up (those afraid of heights like me – hold on tight!) we hiked around the top of the mountain taking in the amazing view. You can actually see where land meets sky at the top!
After a lovely dinner at a beautiful hotel called the Vineyard we made plans for the next day. The food has been delicious! And the wine – amazing – which brings me to today.
On our second day in Cape Town we went on a tour/tasting and lunched at three beautiful wineries in the South African wine lands. Wine here is a specialty and the tastings were exquisite. And everywhere we go there is a view of the mountains.
We did some shopping in the small town of Franshhoek. Art and jewelry is gorgeous here and shopping is very affordable given the exchange rate of dollars to rands so very easy to do shopping and find many beautiful things.
We also toured the gardens of Kirstenboch today. One of the most beautiful gardens in the world Kirstenboch lies on the Eastern slopes of Table mountain. http://www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch
We ended off our day at the African Cafe dining on traditional African fare served family style while listening to traditional song and dance.
Busy days and busy nights exploring this beautiful area and more to come!
